BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Toys for Tots are well known for helping to provide toys for children during the Christmas season, but with floods impacting much of the region they are starting toy distributions earlier this year.

With extra donations from Christmas, Toys for Tots will be delivering toys to Mount View School in Welch, where disaster recovery items have already been distributed and will continue with the new addition of toys.

The LCO Coordinator for McDowell, Mercer and Eastern Tazewell Counties Toys for Tots says to WVVA after seeing the damage from the recent flooding in McDowell County he felt the need to do what he could to help.

“Kids spell love p-l-a-y, and a lot of them lost their toys, and it’s going to do them a lot more, to kind of reestablish some normalcy in their lives than it would be to sit here until distribution in December. Just incredibly grateful to our community, for their generosity. This doesn’t happen without our community, and it’s just you know, I hope this helps. I hope it brightens up some days in McDowell,” said Charlie Smith, LCO Coordinator for McDowell, Mercer and Eastern Tazewell Counties Toys for Tots.

If you would like to provide donations there are Toys for Tots boxes at the Mercer Mall location near Five or Below. Donation boxes will be collected in the morning of March 1, 2025.
