CINCINNATI (WXIX/Gray News) – President Donald Trump announced on social media that he will pardon baseball legend Pete Rose, who has been barred from the National Baseball Hall of Fame for gambling.

“Over the next few weeks, I will be signing a complete pardon of Pete Rose, who shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on his team winning,” Trump shared.

In 1989, Rose received a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling when he was the Cincinnati Reds manager.

Rose, who died at 83 last September, was a colorful and controversial baseball player who became one of the game’s greatest in his hometown of Cincinnati.

In 1963, Rose earned the Rookie of the Year title after joining the Reds and later became MLB’s all-time hit king with 4,256 hits over his 24-year career.

Statistically, Rose has a Hall-of-Fame career. His accolades include:

  • Three-time World Series
    • Two came with the Reds during the 1970s; He was the World Series MVP for Cincinnati in 1975
  • 17 All-Star selections
  • 1973 NL MVP
  • Gold Glove winner (1969, 1970)
  • Three batting titles

In 2016, Rose was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame, and his No. 14 jersey was retired the same year. Rose’s statue outside Great American Ball Park was unveiled the next year.
