SWANSEA, UK — Joey Molland, the last living member of Welsh rock band Badfinger, died Saturday. He was 77. 

His death was announced on the bands Facebook page, run by a social media manager. 

“Well, the day we never wanted to see has arrived,” they posted. “Joey (Joseph Charles) Molland passed away last night, surrounded by Mary, his two sons, and other family members at 11:39pm CST.”

“Long Live Badfinger,” the bands Facebook post said. “Thank you, Joey… for keeping the band’s music alive for so long and for being a friend to us all.”

Molland was struggling with health problems since late November, according to a GoFundMe set up by his girlfriend Mary Joyce. 

“Unfortunately, he has been in the hospital now for 46 days,” the post said. “As you all know, Joey is a strong-willed, independent man. He is fighting with everything he has, but every day is a battle.”

The band, popular in the ’60s through the ’80s, is best known for “Baby Blue,” “No Matter What You Do,” “Day After Day,” “Come and Get It” and “Rock of All Ages.” 

Baby Blue” played during the Breaking Bad finale in 2013. 

Badfinger, known originally as the Iveys, was one of the first bands signed by The Beatles‘ Apple Records, according to Billboard Magazine.

Molland wasn’t featured as the lead vocalist on the original recorded albums, but acted as guitarist and lead singer in concerts through 2024, according to Variety

“Unfortunately, he has been in the hospital now for 46 days,” the post said. “As you all know, Joey is a strong-willed, independent man. He is fighting with everything he has, but every day is a battle.”

The bands main members included Molland on the guitar, Pete Ham as a singer and guitarist, Tom Evans as a bassist and Mike Gibbins as the drummer. The band recorded five albums together from the early ’60s through 1974.
