WELCH, W.Va. – The McDowell Public Library was among the structures that took damage in the February flooding, but cleanup and repairs are underway.

The library is currently closed, with a reopening date yet to be decided. Although the majority of the books were moved upstairs by volunteers for safekeeping, the clerk for the library said the damage they took is still substantial.

“We got hit pretty hard, couple inches of water got in, and ruined probably about a dozen books, and the walls…we’ve had to replace the carpet, and about two foot of walls, and so we’re [going to] have to redo everything downstairs,” explained Chessie Hatfield, a clerk at the library.

The library will be accepting donations when they reopen and will have a list available at that time of what they’re seeking. For more information, you can find them on their website or Facebook page.
