SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police officers were ambushed as they were investigating a hotspot of trouble at an illegal after-hours club on the southwest side of town.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday off the 5000 block of Southwest Military Drive near Old Pearsall Road.
According to Chief William McManus, detectives pulled into an illegal after-hours club and a suspect inside started shooting at them. The detectives returned fire and a 28-year-old male suspect was hit.
Police say the suspect then barricaded himself inside the club and refused to come out. It’s unclear how long the suspect ignored police demands to surrender but finally came out and officers took him into custody. He was taken to a hospital to be treated.
The chief didn’t say if the suspect was seriously hurt but did say there were chaotic moments as those officers were caught in the crossfire. The officer who fired his weapon has six and a half years of service with San Antonio Police.
This was the fourth shooting involving an SAPD officer in 2025.
No other officers or bystanders were injured during this incident. The SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate but concurrent inquiries. Their findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorneys office for an independent review.
This is a developing story.
