AUSTIN, Texas — Excitement is building for South by Southwest, one of Austin’s biggest events of the year that attracts thousands of people to the capital city.
On Monday, city leaders gathered to address how they plan to navigate some of the challenges that come with the crowds and big events.
“As we welcome both visitors and plan for these events that are foundational for both our culture and our economy, we recognize the added strain that puts on city resources,” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said. “What it does for traffic congestion and potential travel delays large scale events can create.”
Watson said the city is prepared, but reminds the community of what to expect. Local leaders said people should anticipate street closures and a heavy flow of traffic. Some streets downtown will be blocked off with barricades or even parked police units.
“Consider using public transportation or rideshare services,” said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis. “Parking will be limited in and around downtown … parking and tow tollway zones will be strictly enforced.”
Davis also said a larger police presence will be seen in the area, urging the public to say something if they see something suspicious.
“Our number one priority is to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at the festival,” Davis said.
South by Southwest also comes amid a measles outbreak in Texas. Health officials reminded people that the best way to fight it is by getting vaccinated, which Watson said more people have been doing.
“We don’t have an outbreak in Austin. And while it is important for people to pay attention, it is important for people to get vaccinated,” Watson said. “We’re looking forward to this festival season and South by and not having any problems in that regard.”
Health officials said that the health policy South by Southwest has implemented since COVID-19 will be implemented this festival season.
“So we’re really anticipating that this is going to be a really healthy and safe season,” said Dr. Desmar Walkes with the Austin-Travis County health authority.
