(CNN) – Dozens of construction workers in India have been pulled alive from metal containers after being trapped by a deadly avalanche for roughly 36 hours.

The Indian Army launched a rescue operation after heavy snowfall triggered the Himalayan avalanche last Friday near a construction site.

Authorities said 46 workers survived inside the containers.

Eight were killed.

Many of those rescued were migrant workers constructing a highway in the remote region.

A defense spokesperson said they usually pitch tents but had set up temporary shelter in eight metal containers due to inclement weather. That decision likely saved many lives.
