LEVITTOWN, Pa. (KYW) – A school nurse in Pennsylvania went above and beyond the call of duty.

Stephanie Frisco helped deliver a colleague’s baby when the mother went into labor at an elementary school.

It was far from a typical day for Genevieve Peto, a reading specialist at Walter S. Miller Elementary School.

“Got to work and was feeling a little pressure,” Genevieve Peto described. “It really wasn’t until 11:15 that I was like, ‘Something is really not right here.’”

Genevieve Peto was pregnant with her third child and close to her due date when she began to feel a little off.

A fellow teacher rushed to get Frisco, the school nurse.

“When she brought the wheelchair, she took me back and I just figured that I’d be waiting for someone to come pick me up, and she recognized right away that you can’t wait. You need to lie on the bed right here,” Genevieve Peto remembered.

Frisco quickly realized Genevieve Peto was ready to give birth.

“I’ve never delivered a baby before. I just have experience in a lot of the fields,” Frisco said.

Time was of the essence, and in 10 minutes, a 5-pound 4-ounce baby named Cora made her big debut.

“The baby came out and I suctioned the mouth and she started crying, and it was the most beautiful cry I’ve ever heard,” Frisco said.

The newborn’s father, Todd Peto, missed some at first, but said he remembers eventually getting the call.

“I’m also a teacher and I was trying to start a class, and they were trying to call me with Gen’s phone and I’m like, ‘Hold on. I got to put you on hold,’” Todd Peto recounted.

Now, the Peto family is forever grateful for Frisco’s quick thinking.

“I’m just truly thankful that everything is OK,” Genevieve Peto said. “She really was an angel, truly.”

And Frisco is thankful she will forever be part of the baby’s journey.

“Gen definitely has a story to tell and Cora will always have that story to tell for the rest of her life. I’m just happy I was able to be a part of it,” Frisco said.

The newborn is now back home with her mother and father.
