The color choice was deliberate.

WASHINGTON — Democratic congresswomen made a bold statement during President Donald Trump’s congressional address by wearing carefully chosen shades of pink, red and burgundy.

The color choice was deliberate. Pink has been reclaimed by feminist movements as a symbol of strength and unapologetic self-expression. At least a half dozen Democratic congressmen in joined on the action with pink ties.

This is not the first time Democratic women have used clothing as a form of political communication. Last year, they wore white to signal support for women’s rights and reproductive freedom. The pink protest continues this tradition of silent yet impactful political messaging.

The timing of the statement comes amid ongoing debates about reproductive rights, workplace equality and gender representation in leadership.

Many Democratic lawmakers simultaneously incorporated blue and yellow accessories in support of Ukraine, showcasing their ability to layer multiple political messages through strategic clothing choices.

The silent protests didn’t stop there as some Democrats held circular black signs with white lettering that included statements like “Protect Veterans,” “Save Medicaid,” False” and “Musk Steals.” Some lawmakers held the signs higher as Trump began his remarks and every time the president boasted his accomplishments, they held up the signs.

Despite some notable absences, the Democratic side of the House chamber was largely packed ahead of Trump’s address.

Some Democrats chose to boycott the speech, including Reps. Becca Balint of Vermont, Don Beyer and Gerry Connelly of Virginia, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Senators Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Patty Murray, D-Wash., also chose not to attend.
