AUSTIN, Texas — A new documentary touting unseen footage of the Queen of Tejano and her family is coming to Austin.
“Selena y Los Dinos” has already won an award at the Sundance Film Festival following its premiere in January. Now the film is headed for South by Southwest.
The documentary won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling, as the jury stated director Isabel Castro “transported” the audience to “a specific time and place, evoking themes of family, heritage, love and adolescence.”
The film tells the story and enduring impact of Selena Quintanilla through heartfelt interviews with family and bandmates as they continue to honor the Tejano icon’s memory while preserving her legacy.
When will the film premiere at SXSW?
“Selena y Los Dinos” will have two showings during the festival.
The first will be at noon on Wednesday, March 12 at the Paramount Theatre in Downtown Austin. A second showing will take place to end the festival on Saturday, March 15 at 6:45 p.m. inside the AFS Cinema.
Primary access will be given to those with a Platinum Badge or a Film & TV Badge. Secondary access is available to anyone with a Music Badge, Interactive Badge, or a Film & TV Wristband.
The premiere comes nearly 30 years after Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar in Corpus Christi. Saldívar was recently the subject of a limited true crime series on Oxygen, “Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them” where she spoke about being in jail for the singer’s murder.
Saldívar will be eligible for parole on March 30.
