Austin police initially ruled the man’s death as a homicide but changed the incident to an accidental death after reviewing evidence.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police have reversed course on what initially appeared to be a deadly stabbing at a homeless encampment in southeast Austin.

According to police, on Nov. 10, 2024, they received multiple calls regarding a stabbing on East William Cannon Drive near Bluff Springs Road in southeast Austin.

When they arrived, they found 29-year-old Elijah Martinez bleeding from a wound in his chest while he lay on top of metal rods. Martinez would be taken to the hospital where he later died.

Despite video of multiple people running from the scene at the time of the incident, police shared an update on Friday that Martinez’s death has now been ruled accidental.

Police said the evidence shows Martinez fell while riding his bike. His death has been removed as the 59th homicide of 2024 and replaced with a shooting from June where a woman is now accused of killing her cousin during an incident.
