The Special Needs Collaborative hosts a Dr. Seuss celebration for their students and their families

PRINCETON, W.Va. – Princeton City Hall… transforming into a scene straight out of a Dr. Seuss book Friday.

Hosted by The Special Needs Collaborative, the event brings students together for a day of storytelling, activities, and Seuss-inspired fun.

The theme, “Born to Stand Out”.

Event coordinator Jamie Allen says these students deserve the same joyful experiences as everyone else.

She says, “These events are designed all around families with special needs. It doesn’t matter the age of the child or the adult. If you have a special need, sometimes it’s difficult to attend carnivals, go to the movies, go out to eat. So, we want to provide events for families, have an opportunity to truly embrace and come out together as a family to share in activities.”

From reading classic Dr. Seuss books to hands-on crafts and games, organizers say the goal is to let students shine as individuals while creating lasting memories.

Alysha Crawford, the founder of The Special Needs Collaborative, says she’s overjoyed by the school system’s support.

She says, “It’s so touching to see our school system willing to allow them to come and participate in this, and like Jamie said, this is designed for them. So anywhere from our accessible changing tent to making sure there’s enough space for wheelchairs to maneuver, everything is designed for them, and so, just to see them come in and excited and engage means absolutely the world to us.”

The community support is exactly what makes this event special for students like Colten Robinette.

He says, “I think it’s really awesome. I liked it. It was pretty fun, amazing—everything about it was really good.”

The Special Needs Collaborative hopes to host monthly events for these students throughout the year.

Their next event is set for April 5th, from 2PM to 5PM, at Dick Copeland Square Park in Princeton.
