(WFXT) – Police are sharing the chilling statements made by a 22-year-old who is accused of murdering his mother.

Thaddeus Joseph has been charged with the murder of his mother, Astrid Joseph, while his father was at work.

“The defendant had told the victim and him that he was having anxiety and mental health issues,” Norfolk County Assistant District Attorney Christine Cullinan said.

Astrid Joseph’s husband found his wife’s body on the kitchen floor next to a carving knife. The family’s Nissan Pathfinder was gone.

Police quickly tracked down Thadeus Joseph.

“The family is going through some things and they’re trying to come to grips with what happened,” family friend Richard Gedeon said.

Gedeon says the traumatic details are magnifying the heartbreak for the family.

According to a police report, Thadeus Joseph was “extremely uncooperative” and responded sarcastically to booking questions.

A police body camera reportedly captured the 22-year-old saying, “This is so funny. All I had to do was kill my mom and then this is it?”

“It’s got to be some mental illness. It can’t be just a malicious act. It’s got to be something. They have such a close family,” family friend Keith McDermot said.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can call the 988 Lifeline.
