MYSTIC, Conn. — Chappy, a seal who was rescued from a street in New Haven in February, has died, according to Mystic Aquarium Monday.
According to the aquarium, the gray seal pup died from gastrointestinal issues that “were too severe to treat.”
“A complete necropsy was conducted, and findings are consistent with mesenteric torsion, meaning that his intenstines were twisted around the mesentery, cutting off blood supply to a large portion of the gastrointestinal tract,” the aquarium said. “This condition can be challenging to diagnose and has a poor prognosis.”
The aquarium also noted that, unrelated to his immediate cause of death, there were small pieces of plastic in his stomach, which pose a threat to marine animals.

“The Mystic Aquarium staff are proud that they were able to give Chappy the best chance possible and are devastated by this outcome,” the aquarium said. “The reality of working with stranded animals can be tough sometimes, but Chappy was surrounded by love until the very end. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with words of encouragement and support. It means so much to our team.”
Chappy was found on Chapel Street, hence his name, on Feb. 16, where Mystic Aquarium rescued him and brought him to their Rescue Clinic.
He was originally found dehydrated, malnourished and had mild pneumonia, the aquarium said. He initially responded positively to treatment but his condition began declining as he transitioned to eating whole fish and had “digestive difficulties,” the aquarium said.
