WYOMING COUNTY, W.Va. – A historic basketball game took place in Clear Fork on Saturday, celebrating kids participating in the Special Olympics.

Westside High School’s gym filled up with cheering fans and athletes as the Wyoming County Special Olympics hosted its first county game in over three decades, featuring both basketball players and a cheerleading squad.

With a healthy turnout of fans and student athletes, the Local Program Director, Holly Hale, told WVVA that their hard work preparing for the event paid off.

“It’s been wonderful, ever since we’ve really… started getting going [in the] later part of 2024, it was just energetic to say the least,” said Hale.

A board member of the Special Olympics and parent to one of the players, Tom Riser, said events like this bring athletes together and create a community bond.

“It’s fostering a sense of community for these kids…and the parents here in this county,” said Riser.

And as the students shot hoops and cheered, Hale reminded us of what it’s all about.

“…It’s like a dream come true for these kids,” added Hale.

Hale also told WVVA that they plan to host another county game next year.

Congratulations to all the athletes.
