The district says there is no ongoing threat to students or staff and law enforcement is investigating the incident.

KILLEEN, Texas — Roy J Smith Middle School in Killeen was placed on lockdown on March 10 after a student was stabbed on campus, according to the district.

The district said in a statement around noon that there is no ongoing threat to students or staff and that law enforcement is investigating the incident.

The district held a press conference at Manna Church Monday afternoon.

Killeen ISD confirmed that an “altercation” took place around 11:23 a.m. between two students which resulted in one of the students being stabbed.

The district said the suspect, who is also a student, was “quickly apprehended” by KISD police and is in custody at the time of writing.

EMS were “immediately requested” and on the scene and began caring for the student who was stabbed within seven minutes, KISD said. 

The student who was stabbed was taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center where they died of their injuries, police said. Neither student has been identified at this time.

The Killeen Police Department’s criminal investigation unit is reportedly conducting a homicide investigation. KISD said counseling and support services will be available for students and staff.

A message from Principal Fred Lilly to families reads as follows:

Smith Families,

We want to inform you of a situation that occurred on our campus this morning. A student was injured and is being transported to recieve medical care. Our school has been placed in a LOCKDOWN status. Student(s) will not be released during a LOCKDOWN.

At this time, there is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and law enforcement is actively investigating. We understand that this may be concerning, and we want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priority.

We will update you as soon as possible.

6 News will update this article with additional information on the situation as it becomes available. KISD said more details regarding school operations will be communicated by school officials to families.
