AUSTIN, Texas — There was an increased police presence on the McCallum High School campus Monday morning following an online threat.
McCallum Principal Andy Baxa said in a letter to families that early Monday morning, school officials received a report of a social media threat against the school. Baxa said McCallum immediately notified the Austin ISD Police Department, which quickly identified the source of the post and made contact with the student’s family.
Based on their investigation, officers said they had no reason to believe the student planned to carry out the threat. However, out of an abundance of caution, extra officers were placed on campus during drop-off on Monday.
“I want to thank the students and families who brought this social media post to our attention. We must all work together to keep our campus safe,” Baxa said. “Austin ISD takes all threats seriously. Threats of any kind against our school community are not tolerated.”
The principal asked parents and guardians to remind their students to never repost online threats and to instead notify a trusted adult if they see threatening posts.
Community members are asked to report any suspicious activity to the AISD Police non-emergency line at 512-414-1703. anyone with any questions or concerns about this incident can contact Baxa by emailing [email protected].
