CHARELSTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Treasurers office has announced a first in office history: the online auction of firearms confiscated across the state. The lot sold for $26,150.
State Treasurer Larry Pack says going digital is an effort to “modernize” the process and ultimately raises the market value of the weapons by opening up the auction to a wider audience.
The firearms were sold to a federal firearm licensed dealer in Pennsylvania. The Treasurer’s Office says more than 50 bids across 13 states were entered into the auction. There were 113 firearms and 400 pounds of ammunition sold.
The following 14 law enforcement agencies turned over firearms for the auction:
- Bluefield Police Department
- Cabell County Sheriff’s Office
- Doddridge County Sheriff’s Office
- Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office
- Jackson County Sheriff’s Office
- Lewis County Sheriff’s Office
- Monroe County Sheriff’s Office
- Putnam County Sheriff’s Office
- Terra Alta Police Department
- Upshur County Sheriff’s Office
- Violent Crime Task Force
- Wood County Sheriff’s Office
- Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office
- West Virginia State Police – Berkeley Springs, Buckhannon, Saint Mary’s Detachments
The Treasurer’s Office plans to continue this effort digitally with the next online auction scheduled from April 14-28 where more than 200 firearms will be for sale.
Money raised from these auctions is set to get back to first responders.
“I am proud to put these dollars back into law enforcement agencies so they can purchase the equipment they need to better serve the public,” Treasurer Pack said.
