(CNN) – CVS is opening smaller stores that only have pharmacies as it tries to adjust to a changing industry.
CVS plans to open roughly a dozen stores this year that only have a pharmacy and are about half the size of the normal layout.
The smaller-format stores will have a full-service pharmacy as well as some over-the-counter products, but they won’t have the part of the store that usually sells snacks, makeup, cards and other items.
The new store format is one part of CVS’ turnaround plans as it tries to adjust to a changing industry. The chain’s moves have also included more than 1,000 store closures and thousands of layoffs.
Drug store chains with large retail sections have struggled to keep up with companies like Amazon and Target. They’ve also had issues with theft, which has chipped away at profitability.
