Thirty employees were laid off across Central Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — Catholic Charities of Central Texas (CCCTX) is suspending its refugee resettlement program and laying off 30 employees across Central Texas due to federal funding cuts.

CCCTX has multiple aid programs, but the nonprofit is suspending a vital one, the Refugee Resettlement Services Program. It’s another organization impacted by President Donald Trump’s executive order freezing federal funding to organizations that help refugees.

“These services are primarily federally funded, and unfortunately we have not received reimbursement for these services that we’ve provided since the funding freeze was announced in January,” said Allison Cavazos, interim executive director for CCCTX.

Cavazos said through the program, they integrated 700 refugee families.

“Everything from employment, helping find jobs, social adjustment, helping families just navigate new life here in Central Texas,” Cavazos added. “Enrolling for refugee benefits, helping navigate school systems, really providing robust services.”

CCCTX will continue offering legal representation for existing refugee clients until their cases are complete.

Meanwhile, refugees can still take advantage of the other six programs provided to everyone.

“We provide mental health support, pregnancy and parenting support, financial assistance,” said Cavazos.
