A GP has issued a warning about a trending social media fad among influencers who advocate the trick as a weight loss hack. The viral tip has influencers suggest that drinking olive oil can enhance weight loss.
Social media stars are suggesting sipping a shot of olive oil first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to drop pounds fast. But instead of having the desired effect, Dr Masarat Jilani has warned that it could trigger a number of issues.
Dr Jilani, a GP at health supplement provider Jude, had a clear message for those considering the trick. Dr Jilani cautioned: “While for most people a small amount of olive oil is unlikely to cause any real harm, it is a natural laxative and may lead to diarrhoea, particularly in those with a sensitive digestive system. It’s also calorie-dense, so if you’re on a calorie-controlled diet, adding an additional tablespoon of olive oil daily could lead to weight gain.
“If weight is a concern, a better way to include olive oil is by putting it in a spray bottle and using one or two squirts to cook fresh vegetables. This is a much healthier way to consume olive oil and a more economical one, given that the cost of a litre of olive oil in the UK is currently over £7.
“If you suffer from gallbladder disease or IBS, a daily shot of olive oil could be more problematic, and you would be best off speaking to your doctor before incorporating it into your diet.”
Research indicates that opting for plant-based fats can boost your health and olive oil is known to be beneficial, reports Leicestershire Live. But Dr Jilani warns that excessive consumption could lead to illness and weight gain.
“Olive oil has a mild lubricating effect on the intestine, so consuming it as a shot may lead to diarrhoea, especially if you already have a sensitive digestive system or suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Consuming pure oil first thing in the morning on an empty stomach without food may lead to nausea or a general feeling of unease in your stomach.
“Olive oil triggers the gallbladder to release bile, which aids in fat digestion. While this is generally beneficial, for those with gallstones or gallbladder disease, it may cause pain and cramping.
“Although olive oil is a healthy fat, it is still pure fat and is therefore calorie-dense, containing around 120 kcal per tablespoon. This means a shot glass could be around 360 calories, you could enjoy an entire healthy breakfast for that.
“If you add it into your diet in this way without adjusting your overall calorie intake, it may contribute to weight gain over time. Some people may find that they experience acid reflux from consuming straight olive oil, especially if they are already prone to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).”
