(CNN) – Southwest Airlines is getting rid of its most recognizable perk – free checked bags.

The air carrier is scrapping its iconic policy just months after ditching its open seating policy.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will start charging for flyers’ first and second checked bags beginning on May 28.

However, members of Southwest’s A-List loyalty program or those traveling on a business fare will be exempt from the fees.

The development comes amid calls for leadership changes and an operations overhaul to boost profitability.

It also follows Elliott Investment Management taking a $1.9 billion stake in the carrier last year.
