PRINCETON, W.Va. -With Spring moving at this time of year local shelters often overflow with puppies and kittens causing them to reach past max capacity. The Mercer County Animal Shelter is no stranger to being in code red but has been able to avoid euthanasia thus far.

The director says the Empty the Shelter Event is critical to keep from having to put animals down.

“ Puppy and kitten season is starting. We’re seeing a lot of puppies. So, I had emailed the Bissell Foundation because they do events all throughout the year, but the first one wasn’t until May and they agreed to do an emergency adoption event for us,” said Stacy Harman, Mercer County Animal Shelter Director.

Currently any adoption will be covered by Bissell Pet Foundation including the animal being fixed, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped in hopes to adopt these sweet animals into loving homes.

“ If we do not get some runs, then we would be forced to have to euthanize. We’ve been able to avoid it all year, but I’ve been in code red for several months now, and it’s to the point now that I have nowhere else to put anything,” continued Harman.

If you are unable to adopt, Harman says there are still ways you can help by providing donations.

“We can always use food. We are down pretty good on dog food, so, where I do have so many, and it takes a lot more food to feed them all. So, we can use a lot of food, puppy chow especially, and wet food.”

The Empty the Shelter Event is going on now and runs until this coming Saturday March 15th.
