Gin’s been on a wild ride over the centuries, from being known as ‘mother’s ruin’ to becoming an essential staple of classy cocktail evenings. A tonne of refinement has also gone into it in that time, not least with the much-loved Tanqueray that’s been around since 1830. If you’re due a restock and appreciate this brand known for its smooth, crisp and flavoursome gin, we’ve got a deal for you.

Right now you can pick up a litre of Tanqueray London Dry Gin for £22.97 down from £29 at Amazon. That’s cheaper than the £29.25 you’d pay at Tesco, £31 at Waitrose, and £22.97 at Asda. There’s also a 70cl option for £20.50 down from £22 (all prices correct at the time of writing).

A classic London dry gin, Tanqueray has an excellent balance that goes down easily and mixes well for a wide range of cocktails. Still made to the timeless recipe laid out by Charles Tanqueray almost 200 years ago, this is a true heritage gin without the typical hefty price tag.

Elsewhere, the highly-rated Roku Japanese Craft Gin is available for £28.99 at Master of Malt. If you prefer a simple option, Gordon’s London Dry Gin for £18.95 at The Whisky Exchange is a great price.

Juniper berries, peppery coriander, angelica and sweet liquorice make up the flavour profile of Tanquery, and its rich aromas mean it will make for a great G&T even with basic supermarket tonic water. It’s an award-winner too, not least for being crowned the Best-Selling Gin on several occasions.

With 4.8 out of 5 stars averaged from over 8,600 ratings, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more well-regarded gin at Amazon. “Love this really smooth gin,” said one five-star review. “Mixes well with just about everything or just lots and lots of ice. I prefer it to my previous love, Bombay Sapphire, because of the smoothness.”

“Really lovely gin, goes well with a decent tonic like Fever Tree,” said another. “Great flavours and not too harsh to drink.”

Another added: “Of the hundreds of different gins available these days, you cannot beat the classic London Dry with a slice of lemon, ice and tonic. We’ve been drinking Tanqueray for 40-plus years. Top quality and superb taste.”

The small batch of less-positive reviews take aim at a slight reduction of ABV that’s been introduced in recent years. “I don’t like the fact that the alcohol strength has reduced. This used to be our favourite gin, but we have to pay more for the No10 now,” said one three-star review.

“It used to be 43.1 vol now 41.3, that 2% makes a difference,” said another. “It’s a good deal at present and still tastes okay, but disappointed. Will have to find a new brand.” Your priorities may differ, of course.
