(CNN) – Comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell says she has moved to Ireland due to the political climate in the United States.
O’Donnell, 62, posted to TikTok on Tuesday saying she moved away from the U.S. on Jan. 15. Her 12-year-old child, Clay, joined her in the move.
“Although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child,” she said in the TikTok video.
The comedian says she is working on getting her Irish citizenship. Her grandparents are from the country.
“It’s been pretty wonderful,” she said. “The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. I’m very grateful.”
O’Donnell says her move was prompted by the current political climate in the U.S.
“When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she said.
Other celebrities who have moved out of the U.S. in recent months include Eva Longoria, Ellen DeGeneres and Richard Gere, CNN reports.
