WEST VIRGINIA – The West Virginia Department of education has announced $1 million in funding for school safety upgrades.

Mercer and Wyoming County were among the 24 entities chosen to receive funding. They will each receive $50,0000 from the department to make safety upgrades at their schools.

Projects include secure entrances, access controls, security cameras, lock replacements, transaction windows, bollards and security window film.

“The safety and security of our students, educators and staff remain the highest priority of our schools,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “These grants will fund construction projects that will help ensure that learning, growth and student achievement can be completed safely in a trusted and secure building.”

The grants are a part of the $1 million appropriation made possible through House Bill 230 passed during the West Virginia Legislature’s 2024 special session.
