PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Gray News) – A high school senior is charged with assault and battery after hitting a competitor in the head with a baton during a track meet.
According to the Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Alaila Everett, a student at I.C. Norcom High School, was charged with a misdemeanor after a video went viral showing her hitting Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker with a baton during the 4×200 meter relay.
Tucker was knocked to the ground and out of the race after being hit.
It happened at the Virginia High School League’s Class 3 indoor track state championships. Everett and I.C. Norcom were disqualified.
Everett says the incident was an accident.
Tucker was diagnosed with a concussion and a possible skull fracture.
