SUMMERS COUNTY W.Va. – After three years of preparations, The Pipestem Summers County Elementary School Museum is opening its doors to the public this weekend. The museum will show original school objects, railroad memorabilia and various displays relating to the area’s history.

“It’s exciting to me even though I did not attend here, my husband did, it’s exciting to me to preserve the history,” said Bonnie Young, co-founder and president of the Pipestem Heritage Group.

The museum is meant to give its patrons a taste of what the school house and community were like in decades past, but for some it’s a journey of nostalgia.

“Well, I have a lot of my…old family that used to go here, and it… really made me feel good that…I got to help do this,” said Ricky Albert, a former student of the school.

Young tells us that opening the museum is an act of preservation.

“It’s more than a museum, it’s keeping up with the cultures of the past, keeping our heritage and history here,” Young said.

The museum is located at 118 True Road off Rt. 20 near Pipestem. The grand opening will be Sunday, March 16th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a preview opening on Saturday March 15th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $5 and is an additional $15 to include dinner. Both Saturday and Sunday will offer a meal.
