PITTSBURGH, Penn. (KDKA) – A St. Patrick’s Day party turned into chaos after a porch roof collapsed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Friday.
It happened near the University of Pittsburgh.
Dozens of people were on it when it buckled, falling on top of the crowd below.
A total of 16 people were taken to the hospital, including three who had serious injuries, but all are expected to survive.
“It was crazy,” Ben Dorish said.
Dorish was under the roof and was struck in the head when it collapsed.
“There was probably like 30 people on the roof and the whole thing fell right down on us,” he said. “
Dorish said that as soon as the roof collapsed people came and began to lift it up, allowing for those stuck underneath to get out.
“So, it was really good to see that,” he said.
Injuries ranged from concussions to leg and arm injuries. Stretchers were seen carrying people away to ambulances.
“What’s going through my mind is I can’t believe this happened,” One student, who didn’t provide her name, said.
She said she caught the shocking moment on camera
“I took the video to have me have the surrounding of me having fun and then it fell,” she said.
The student told KDKA there are St. Patrick’s Day parties in the same spot each year.
“People were on it last year and nothing happened,” she said.
The city condemned the porch, what’s left of it now sits behind the home.
“It just felt like so scary, like I don’t have the words to comprehend how I felt in the moment because I’m still just kind of processing,” Michael Estocin said.
Estocin was on the roof when it collapsed.
“I didn’t really feel like it was a real risk, I guess,” he said.
Looking back, it’s a decision he regrets.
The University of Pittsburgh sent out a memo urging students to stay off roofs as they celebrate this weekend.
