CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that he’s calling for an investigation into why West Virginia University’s men’s basketball team did not make the NCAA Tournament.

Morrisey says he’s asking West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey to formally look into the NCAA’s selection criteria.

“Given the major event that the tournament has become, and the massive amount of money associated with it, all fans deserve to know how the selection committee makes its choices. The selection committee of the past is antiquated and it is time for change, to lead with data driven results and transparency,” said Attorney General J.B. McCuskey.

WVU was left out of the tournament in favor of the University of North Carolina’s team, despite many experts believing WVU should have made it in.

WVU and UNC had similar strength of schedules but Morrisey says WVU managed to pull off more impressive wins versus top teams despite having a worse overall record than UNC.

“The tar heels went 1-12 in quad one games and even had a quad three loss. We keep hearing about the importance of these quad one wins but UNC couldn’t even get more than one,” said Morrisey. “They also had the 25th toughest schedule right behind WVU.

The mountaineers had six quad one wins.

UNC’s athletic director, Bubba Cunningham is the chair of the selection committee for the tournament. Cunningham cited the season ending injury for mountaineer’s guard Tucker DeVries as the deciding factor for WVU to be left out.

DeVries was ruled out for the season on Feb. 4
