The San Antonio River Dyeing Parade transforms the river to an emerald green for the holiday that’s all about luck, joy and fun.

SAN ANTONIO — This weekend kicked off St. Patrick’s Day in San Antonio with an annual tradition the city has continued for the past 56 years.

The San Antonio River Dyeing Parade transforms the river to an emerald green for the holiday that’s all about luck, joy and fun. Twenty-five gallons of eco-friendly dye are used for the occasion.

“We have a bit of, national fun, like in Chicago, that they do the dyeing of the river,” said Cris Cantu, who traveled from Mission for the event. “You all do it here in San Antonio, and we enjoy it here in Texas. Everybody, has that vibe, the same vibe. The party, the culture, and, of course, the city always offers, you know, its own flavor of fun. So we enjoy it.”

At Mad Dogs British Pub, plenty of people dress in green, and if you get lucky you may even spot a leprechaun.

For Brad Bock, becoming “Lucky the Leprechaun” with his best friend as his pot of gold has become a tradition.

“Every year for the past, maybe 5 or 7 years, I’ve been getting dressed up as a leprechaun, and I got, like, three different outfits this weekend,” he said. “I just wish for everybody in San Antonio that the Irish eyes are smiling upon them all year long.”

The River Dyeing happens again on Sunday from 1-3 pm.
