LOS ANGELES (CNN) – Something surprising happened at the finish line of the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday.

An American man came in first place.

Matt Richtman, of Illinois, became the first American male to win the race in 31 years.

His time was recorded at 2 hours, 7 minutes, 56 seconds.

An American male won the Los Angeles Marathon for the first time since 1994.

The former Montana State University star crossed the finish line nearly 3 minutes before the runner-up.

An American runner last won the race in 1994, with Kenyans placing first most of the time since then.

Richtman says Sunday’s race was only his second marathon.
