AUSTIN, Texas — After years of uncertainty, Google has confirmed it will occupy the massive “sail” tower in Downtown Austin.
On Tuesday, the tech giant confirmed to KVUE it will move into the 35-story, 804,000-square-foot skyscraper on West Second Street later this year.
Google has held the lease for the building since 2019, but the tower has remained empty since it was finished in 2022. After the pandemic, Google delayed moving workers into the building.
The company hasn’t shared specific details about the timeline for the move or whether it will occupy the entire building.
“We look forward to opening our new Austin office at 601 W. Second this year that deepens our longstanding commitment to Texas and the local community,” said Ryan Lamont, a Google spokesperson.
Google’s lease there runs through 2038.
At the end of last year, the building was acquired by new owner Cousins Properties in a $522 million sale.
The sail building is located close to Cousins’ existing downtown properties, which include a total of 17 million square feet and are 93% leased.
Cousins is also the largest owner of office space at The Domain in North Austin, with 2.5 million square feet across 11 buildings. Its other tenants include Amazon, Expedia, Adobe and Fidelity.
