For It’s a Grand Old Team to Spray For… well, maybe not. Watergate at Celtic Park on Sunday has led to a flood of calls on the Hotline.

Rangers squirter Vaclav Cerny could be in hot water for soaking Celts but Gers fans have hit back and branded their rivals bottle merchant.

Charles Buchanan emailed: “Ally McCoist thought it was funny skooshing water at Celtic supporters. I wonder if it was the other way around, would he think the same.

“If a supporter did that to the Rangers bench he would have been arrested and charged. The guy could have caused a riot. I hope Rangers take steps to hammer him as well.”

David Brennan, via email, said: “As mildly amusing as Cerny’s water sports was it could have caused all sorts of crowd problems with tensions running high.

“The powers that be are constantly berating fans for throwing missiles, they should come down hard on him to stop this idiocy.”

Some folk found the funny side.

Scott McAdam, Glasgow, said: “I wonder how many will be at Ibrox for the home games after the split because in three weeks time the Europe Pub League will be over so it’s hibernation time again as we lift another Treble.

“Rangers will have nothing to spray for…”

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “When Celtic players play at Ibrox in a few months, the Hoops players should spray champagne over the Rangers fans as we’ll be on a World record ninth Treble.”

Dr Robert S Pender, via email, said: “Come on, it is time to grow up. The squirting of water was not malicious but a spur of the moment rush of joy.

“It was silly and I am sure players will learn from this silly act. To bring the Police in is only flaming the fire.”

Steven Brown, Fife, said: “The Celtic fans who are complaining need to give their heads a wobble. It was a bit banter which is now sadly missing from the Scottish game. The same fans want to dish out verbals at players can’t take it back.”

But Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: “The SFA must wake up at night thinking how they can punish Rangers. The Rangers squad endured two hours of abuse yet it seems that squirting water is a major crime.”

George Wilson, Glasgow, said: “What have things come to? How very embarrassing to be in the Celtic camp when the club and fans are complaining about skooshing water. As usual they can’t take being beaten fair and square.”

Jimmy Mac, Glasgow, said: “I wonder what the polis will charge Cerny with? Attempted murder by a splash of water? Everyone is laughing at it – including Celtic fans.”

Record Sport’s Chris Sutton took a pop at Rangers for their Parkhead party.

But Peter Copperwhite emailed: “Sutton and Alan Thompson said Gers celebration was over the top and out of order.

“You played in a good few derbies, if you’re one point behind or 20, it’s what’s called bragging rights and one-upmanship. Celtic have a team of young posers and one trick ponies who flatter to deceive.”

Donald Dundas, Uddingston, said: “There’s only one word to sum up Chris Sutton’s feelings – raging.”

Stuart McLeod emailed: “Scoring three at the home of your rivals was fantastic. Letting a two goal lead slip then bagging a late winner, amazing. Watching Chris Sutton throw his toys out the pram afterwards – priceless. This Celtic squad best watch or Chris will accuse them of lying down to Rangers.”

Gers defender Dujon Sterling said naughty stuff about Celtic Park on social media.

And Arrin Geddes, Irvine, said: “Sterling got me smiling again, no, laughing, at his observations on Celtic Park. I’ll take the opinions of Xavi, Messi and Ronaldo before listening to Dujon Sterling. Come back when you’ve done something noteworthy son.”

Gordon Ashley Ayr, said; “The only time they can beat us is in dead rubber games and until they can beat us in a competitive one they will be living in the shadow of the worlds most successful football club.”
