AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County District Attorney’s Office announced an Austin police officer pleaded guilty in connection to a use-of-force case.
Officer Alejandro Gaitan was indicted in 2023. Prosecutors said he used a Taser and hit Carvius Jackson with a baton multiple times during an arrest in 2021.
Gaitan pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily injury.
He will have to complete two years of deferred adjudication, surrender his state peace officer license, write an apology letter to Jackson, complete an anger management course and complete 40 hours of community service.
“We are grateful to the Austin Police Department for bringing this incident to light, as this case was investigated collaboratively by APD’s Special Investigations Unit and our Civil Rights Unit,” stated Travis County District Attorney José Garza. “Ensuring accountability in law enforcement when laws are violated is essential for restoring community trust and maintaining the safety of our community.”
