WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on the phone Wednesday after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a full ceasefire deal.

In a post on Truth Social, Presdient Trump described the discussion as a “very good telephone call” that lasted an hour. He wrote that much of the discussion was about about aligning Ukraine and Russia “in terms of their requests and needs,” based on Trump’s call on Tuesday with the Russian president.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during the White House on Wednesday that the call was very positive.

“I would just like to emphasize we have never been this close to peace, and it’s only because of President Trump that we are here,” said Leavitt.

During Trump’s lengthy call with President Putin on Tuesday, the Russian leader rejected a proposal for a full unconditional ceasefire deal but agreed to immediately halt attacks on Ukrainian energy and infrastructure targets for 30 days.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said later in a statement issued later on Wednesday that technical teams will meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to discuss broadening the ceasefire.

The statement also said that President Trump agreed to help Ukraine find additional air defense systems and suggested that the U.S. take ownership of power plants in Ukraine for protection.

In a statement on X after the call, President Zelensky said he believes that lasting peace can be achieved this year with President Trump.
