William Gallas believes Rangers would have to be willing to spend BIG money in the transfer market in order to convince Jose Mourinho to take up the reins at Ibrox in the summer.
Former club captain Barry Ferguson has made a solid start in his role as interim manager, and claimed the Light Blues’ first derby win against Celtic at Parkhead in five years last weekend just three days after dumping Mourinho‘s Fenerbahce out of the Europa League on penalties.
But with the 49ers Enterprises consortium closing in on a takeover of Rangers, the US-based ownership may look to try and attract a coach with more pedigree in the management game at the end of the season.
The Ibrox giants announced an alarming loss of £17m back in October but will hope that the takeover – spearheaded by American businessman Andrew Cavenagh – will inject some much-needed cash into the coffers.
Former Premier League star Gallas played under the special one at Chelsea, helping the Blues scoop up back-to-back English Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.
Mourinho received a warm reception at Ibrox in what turned out to be a disappointing night for his side six days ago and Frenchman Gallas believes the link up with Rangers fans could be a match made in heaven.
However, the ex Arsenal captain stresses that the promise of big backing on the transfer front would be required to tempt the two-time Champions League winner up to Scotland.
Speaking to Spin Genie, he said: “If Jose Mourinho went to Rangers, he is going to have the fans behind him.
“They are so passionate, then it’s about the quality of the players.
“He used to manage big players, so it could be difficult for him to make them champions in the league.
“Then it’s about progress in the Champions League or Europa League which is a different story.
“To get Mourinho back somewhere, you need to ask a lot of questions about both parties, the club and the players, and to see if you can do something together.
“You need commitment from the club bringing him what he wants when he asks for players.
“It’s always the same thing. You have to spend money.”
