BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK) – A deadly crash in California that involved a suspected DUI driver over the weekend took the lives of a couple remains under investigation.

The couple’s family and loved ones are trying to come to terms with what happened.

Desiree and Max Mooney were on their home in an Uber when the crash occurred, their family said.

The couple were out celebrating their best friend’s mother’s birthday Saturday night, but everyone’s celebration quickly turned sour that evening.

Max Mooney was killed in the crash and Desiree Mooney later died at the hospital.

Police said the Uber driver and another passenger were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

The suspected DUI driver was identified as 21-year-old Annabel Correa. Police said she also suffered injuries in the crash but will be facing charges that include murder.

Although Max and Desiree Mooney’s lives were abruptly taken away — their loved ones say their impact on family and friends will live on forever.

Max Mooney’s uncle, Larry Baker, said the couple was inseparable after they found each other in high school where they first became sweethearts.

The couple’s family members said they had just moved back to Bakersfield from San Diego in hopes of purchasing their first home together.

Max Mooney was a union electrician and Desiree Mooney was working at an accounting firm.

Their loved ones said they just cared about everyone around them.

Authorities said their investigation remains ongoing into Saturday night’s crash.
