COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) – Kids are back in the classroom at Covington Middle School after weeks of being out of the building because of a January carbon monoxide leak and its effects, and some parents have been expressing their frustration on social media. They’re still looking for more transparency from the school division. WDBJ7 spoke to a parent about what changes she wants to see.

Parents we spoke to are still concerned with how things are being handled at the school.

“She will be looking today to see, you know, in terms of what’s there, what’s been fixed, what has not been fixed,” said parent Adrienne Fridley.

Fridley’s 7th grade daughter was excited to return to school, but Fridley has some concerns about how her child is being fed with the kitchen still out of commission.

She feels the school division should’ve been more transparent with where they would be getting the food and what’s on the menu, because some students have dietary restrictions.

“With the food being delivered from other schools. I have three other children that are in elementary school, and they have food allergies. What about the students there? Are they being accommodated? Students with diabetes?” she said.

Former School Board member Jacob Wright understands parents’ concerns with transparency and communication, but he feels people need to be more understanding when it comes to school officials, saying no one on the board has malicious intent toward children and they’re all trying to piece together how exactly this happened.

“It’s tough, and I think until people have been a school board member and really understand all the things that they have to deal with and see and hear, I think they’d be more compassionate,” he said.

We reached out to Alleghany Highlands Public Schools to get a comment from the superintendent but did not hear back.
