In fact, a weight loss doctor has unveiled a surprising superfood that costs just 50p that could help you shed some pounds – and you probably already have it in your fridge.

Professor Franklin Joseph, an expert at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, says that mushrooms are not only low in calories but also rich in ergothioneine, a potent antioxidant that may help you control your weight.

“Ergothioneine, predominantly found in mushrooms, exhibits powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” he explained. “These attributes can enhance metabolic processes and support weight loss efforts.”

Mushrooms are the primary dietary source of ergothioneine, according to scientific studies. This unique amino acid is believed to protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.

These are factors often linked to obesity and metabolic disorders. By reducing oxidative damage, ergothioneine may improve cellular function and energy metabolism, facilitating weight loss.

“Common varieties like shiitake, oyster, and king oyster mushrooms are all superfoods and particularly high in ergothioneine and are readily available in supermarkets,” Prof Joseph said.

Consuming around 35-50g of mushrooms per day could provide a meaningful dose of ergothioneine to support weight management, research suggests.

That means a portion would cost around 50p – an affordable way to boost your diet with this powerful compound. And for those who don’t like mushrooms, multi-mushroom supplements are a good option.

“These supplements combine extracts from various mushroom species, potentially providing a higher dose of ergothioneine and other beneficial compounds,” Prof Joseph said.

What’s more, mushrooms are a good source of dietary fibre, which promotes satiety and aids digestion. They also contain essential nutrients like B vitamins and minerals that support overall health and metabolic function.

“Replacing higher-calorie ingredients with mushrooms in your favourite dishes can reduce overall calorie intake without sacrificing flavour,” Prof Joseph said.

“For instance, using mushrooms as a meat substitute in recipes like stir-fries, stews, or even burgers can be a delicious way to cut calories.”

It’s important to note that while mushrooms can support weight loss, they are most effective when included as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

“Regular physical activity, adequate hydration, and mindful eating habits are crucial components of any successful weight loss journey,” Prof Joseph added.
