LAS VEGAS (KVVU/Gray News) – A monolith has been spotted near Las Vegas, about eight months after another was seen in the area.

A monolith appeared Friday morning at the site of the Seven Magic Mountains, a public art installation in Ivanpah Valley, about 10 miles south of Las Vegas.

The Nevada Museum of Art, which co-produced the installation, said the monolith was installed overnight without permission. They said they do not know who installed it and are working to get it removed.

The monolith appears to be around 12 feet tall and has a QR code along one side that is believed to be involved with a cryptocurrency website.

This is not the first time a monolith has been spotted in the Las Vegas Valley.

A monolith was seen in June of 2024, near Gass Peak in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. It was promptly removed with the assistance of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Shortly after that discovery, another monolith was found near the Horsetooth Reservoir in northern Colorado. It was never known if the two monoliths were connected.

Monoliths have been spotted throughout the U.S. and the world for several years.

In 2020, a monolith was discovered in the Utah desert, another was found at the pinnacle of a trail in California and a third was found near Albuquerque, New Mexico. One was found in Romania and at a Turkish World Heritage site, although that was discovered to be a gimmick by the Turkish government.

A majority of the monoliths were destroyed or removed soon after their discovery, with some vandals citing concerns over the impact foot traffic to see the oddity could have on its surroundings.
