Wilmington Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman whose remains were found near a river in northern Delaware earlier this month.

The grisly discovery happened on March 4. Authorities were dispatched to the 1100 block of East 7th Street in Wilmington around 6 p.m. after receiving reports that a body had been found on the banks of the Christina River, a tributary of the Delaware River that flows through southeastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland.

“We received a 911 call from a resident in the community saying they found what they believed to be a human bone,” Sgt. Andrea Botterbusch, with the New Castle County Police Department, told NBC 10 Philadelphia.

After digging and sifting through the area, officers recovered the decomposed remains of an unidentified individual, according to a news release from Wilmington Police.

The remains were then transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy, after which investigators determined the victim was a white female, believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35.

The autopsy also suggested that the body could’ve possibly been at that spot for nearly four months.

Although investigators found “no immediate signs of foul play,” the victim’s cause of death has not yet been determined, officials said.

On Thursday, police released the photo of two tattoos found on the victim’s body asking the public to contact investigators if they have any information about her identity.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Det. James Rook of the WPD Criminal Investigations Division at (302) 576-3621 or by emailing [email protected].
