CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA Health is taking part in a nationwide effort to better understand and treat the long-term effects of COVID-19.

It’s enrolling patients in two clinical trials. One is focused on POTS, a condition that causes dizziness and rapid heartbeat.

The other targets sleep issues like insomnia and extreme fatigue.

“The estimates are that 5% and 34% of people who’ve actually had COVID may have long COVID,” UVA Health’s Doctor Alexandra Kadl said. “So, the estimates that are frightening estimates right now is that maybe 50 million Americans could be affected by it.”

The trials will test medications, light therapy, and other treatments.
