An investigation was underway in New Mexico on Saturday following a “mass shooting” near a park in Las Cruces, police said.
The gunfire erupted Friday around 10 p.m. by the parking lot at Young Park, according to a press release from the Las Cruces Police Department.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found multiple victims suffering gunshot wounds. They were all transported to area hospitals, including the University Medical Center of El Paso in Texas.
Witnesses on the scene also reported seeing at least one body, but no fatalities have been confirmed.
While the exact number of victims is not yet clear, Andrew Cummins, the director of marketing and communications at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, told the New York Times that the center received six patients, five of whom have since been relocated. The extent of their injuries and current conditions were not provided.
The shooting reportedly occurred during a monthly event at the park during which car enthusiasts can show off their modified vehicles. Some 200 people were in attendance, according to the Times.
Witnesses on the scene said a confrontation occurred before the violence, though what about was also unclear. At least one person was reported to be seen with what appeared to be an assault-style weapon.
Police said they’re still working to identify a suspect or suspects. It’s unknown how many people were involved.
“Las Cruces police are receiving assistance from New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives,” authorities said.
“The area surrounding Young Park, particularly Walnut Street south of Lohman Avenue, is temporarily closed to traffic. Police encourage motorists to refrain from traveling in or entering that area.”
