Disabled pensioners are being urged to apply for the new Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP), which replaces Attendance Allowance in Scotland.

The new benefit is designed to support individuals who are disabled or have long-term health conditions, and who require significant care and support. It is also available to pensioners who are terminally ill.

Unlike many benefits, this payment is not means-tested, meaning eligibility is based on the level of care and support needed, rather than income or savings. Depending on the level of support needed, the payment offers between £290 and £434 per month, helping individuals maintain a better quality of life.

Pension Age Disability Payment, first introduced in Scotland in October last year, was made available in more of the country on March 24. The benefit will be available across Scotland from April 22.

How to apply

For disabled pensioners in Scotland, the application process has been made as simple and accessible as possible, with Social Security Scotland – who administers the benefit – offering multiple ways to apply.

You can make your application online, over the phone, online, or request a face-to-face appointment with the team.

Additionally, there is support from VoiceAbility, an independent advocacy service that can assist you throughout the application process.

Social Security Scotland is committed to ensuring that the process is as smooth as possible. It has designed the new system with dignity, fairness, and respect at its core, ensuring that everyone who is eligible for the benefit can access the support they need.

A key development is the ability to nominate a third-party representative to help with communication, making it easier for those who need assistance.

There’s also an accelerated application process for individuals who are terminally ill, ensuring that they receive the highest possible payment quickly.

What if you already receive Attendance Allowance?

For pensioners already receiving Attendance Allowance from the Department for Work and Pensions, there is no need to apply for the new benefit.

Your payments will be automatically transferred to Social Security Scotland, ensuring there is no interruption in the financial support you receive.

A letter will be sent to notify you when the transfer is being processed and another when it’s complete, so you’ll be kept informed every step of the way.
