KANSAS (Gray News) – A trooper with the Kansas State Highway Patrol rescued a kidnapped 6-year-old girl during a traffic stop in February.

According to authorities, the trooper stopped an SUV for a traffic violation and discovered the passenger in the front seat had a warrant for his arrest from another state for kidnapping a girl just over a month prior.

The trooper noticed a girl about that age in the vehicle with the two men in their 60s.

Officials said the driver had a criminal history that included homicide and several weapons violations over the years.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol, the trooper and a deputy secured the men and safely removed the girl from the SUV.

At first, the 6-year-old gave the trooper a fake name, having been coached to do so by the man. But ultimately, highway patrol said the trooper was able to get the girl to tell him her real name.

Authorities confirmed she was the kidnapping victim who had been with this suspect for over a month on the run.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol, the girl was unharmed and the men were taken into custody.
