LOS ANGELES — U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, made some waves on social media after she briefly commented on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott during a Human Rights Campaign Dinner this weekend, referring to him as “Governor Hot Wheels.”
Crockett mentioned Abbott briefly after mentioning being in the hot Texas streets.
“Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there come on now,” she told the audience to laughs and applause. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot ass mess.”
Abbott has been in a wheelchair for decades, when, shortly after law school, a large oak tree fell on him and crushed some of his vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
Crockett issued a statement online where she said she wasn’t thinking about Abbott’s condition.
“I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,” Crockett wrote. “Literally, the next line I said was that he was a “Hot A** Mess,” referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged.”
Crockett has not been shy to criticize politicians on both sides of the aisle. Most recently, she criticized Democratic Sens. John Fetterman and Chuck Schumer, and said Senate Democrats need to sit down and decide whether Schumer is the person to lead in this moment.
She also walked out of Trump’s address to Congress, along with other Democrats, earlier this month, saying that Trump was “spewing all kinds of nonsense.”
Crockett also went viral last year in a confrontational moment with U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene when, after Greene suggested Crockett’s “fake eyelashes” were affecting her reading, Crockett referred to Greene as having a “bleach blonde bad-built butch body.”
