Officers warn of payment method scams(WCJB)

SUMMERS COUNTY, W.Va. – The Summers County Sheriffs Department is warning the public about scams revolving around alternate forms of payment.

A public notice from the department says Summers County has experienced schemes asking for people to pay via payment methods like Apple Cards, iTunes Cards and Prepaid Debit Cards.

Officers want to remind the public that a legitimate business will never ask for payment through those methods. They add that these methods are used by scammers because of the difficulty in tracing them once the money is siphoned.

They ask that you spread the word about these scams to the elderly people in your life to protect them from being taken advantage of.

If you have any questions about the legitimacy of a transaction you can reach out to the Sheriffs Department at 1 304-466-7111.
