The flight landed in Shanghai six hours behind schedule.

LOS ANGELES — A United Airlines plane on an international flight had to turn around over the Pacific Ocean on Saturday and now we know why.

It was apparently because one of the pilots on the flight forgot their passport. United said the flight to Shanghai, China, was carrying 257 passengers and 13 crew members. It was about two hours into the flight when it turned around and went back to San Francisco.

United says it got a new crew to take over the flight, which took off again a few hours later. The flight landed in Shanghai about six hours behind schedule.
