The permit seeks approval to dispose of up to 280,000 gallons of treated wastewater every day through an irrigation system.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — Some homeowners near Liberty Hill say they’re opposed to plans for a new wastewater treatment plant near their homes.

The proposed plant would go near the intersection of Highway 183 and Live Oak Trail, just feet away from homes. The permit seeks approval to dispose of up to 280,000 gallons of treated wastewater daily through an irrigation system on 81 acres.

Dan Davison said he cherishes the peaceful view from his property but fears it may soon change. After 15 years of living there, Davison recently received a letter from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regarding a permit application for the facility.

Taylor Morrison Texas and CVR Land and Cattle applied to construct that wastewater treatment plant right next to Davison’s property.

“They’ve already started putting in some pipe and sewer lines,” Davison said.

Davison expressed concerns about the plant’s potential impact on the environment, possible well water contamination, and the potential for decreased land value.

“I harvest deer off this property to feed my family every year,” Davison said. If they put a sewer plant in next door, that’s not gonna happen anymore.”

He also worries about the notification process, stating that TCEQ isn’t doing enough to alert neighbors. The developer claims notices were posted in the local paper, the Liberty Hill Public Library and sent to nearby landowners.

“Which is a handful of people,” Davison said. “My neighbors are just right around the corner here, so we’ll all be smelling this from now on if they put it in.”

Still, there’s a long process to go before things are finalized. Public comment on the proposed plant is ongoing, then there’s an opportunity for a contested case hearing.

Meanwhile, Taylor Morrison responded with a statement saying it isn’t the current landowner, but that it’s in a “due diligence period on a tract north of Liberty Hill.”

“If this opportunity goes through, Taylor Morrison will be committed to working with TCEQ, following all guidelines, and ensuring communication plans are in place,” the statement read, in part.
